The Best of Both — A 4-Night Victoria Falls Signature Itinerary, Crafted by Our Team

There is a question we hear often from guests who have been researching Victoria Falls for a while: should we stay at The Elephant Camp or Old Drift Lodge? It is a reasonable question, and the honest answer is that they are different enough that choosing one means missing something meaningful about the other. The Signature Special exists because we could not decide either.

The 4-Night Signature Special combines two nights at The Elephant Camp — our ridge-top flagship above the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary, with its gorge views and conservation focus — with two nights at Old Drift Lodge, our riverside retreat on the banks of the Zambezi inside Zambezi National Park. The two properties sit about 20 minutes apart by road but feel like entirely different worlds. That contrast is the point.

This is Installment 4 in the Wild Horizons Victoria Falls Itinerary Series. If you are weighing up a shorter stay, Installments 2 (The Elephant Camp, 3 nights) and 5 (Old Drift Lodge, 3 nights) cover each property individually. The full series and Victoria Falls itinerary pillar is the place to start if you are still finding your way.

How to use this guide

This itinerary is built around the 4-Night Signature Special (4NTECODL): 2 nights at The Elephant Camp followed by 2 nights at Old Drift Lodge, with one complimentary bonus activity included. It suits guests who want depth across two contrasting lodge styles — ridge-top sanctuary immersion followed by riverside wilderness — without extending the trip beyond four nights.

A 6-Night Signature Special (3 nights at each property) is also available for guests who want more time at each lodge. We will cover that itinerary in a separate installment — ask our team for details in the meantime.

Before You Arrive

Zimbabwe Visa

Most nationalities can purchase a visa on arrival at Victoria Falls International Airport. If the Chobe Day Trip is your bonus activity of choice — which takes you across into Botswana — the KAZA Univisa covers Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana and simplifies the border crossing considerably. Complete the Zimbabwe immigration form online before you travel; it shortens the airport process and means the day starts sooner.

What to Pack

Neutral safari colours — olive, khaki, buff — for game drives at both properties. The Elephant Camp has a slightly more elevated evening atmosphere; Old Drift is relaxed riverfront. Comfortable walking shoes for the Falls tour, a light layer for early-morning drives, and a rain jacket in the Green Season. The Zambezi is always cooler on the water than it looks from the bank — a long-sleeved layer for the river safaris and evening cruise is worth packing regardless of season.

Day 1 — Arrival at The Elephant Camp, Gorge Sundowner

Seasonal note: the spray and drama of Victoria Falls shifts significantly across the year. Our Best Time to Visit guide covers exactly what to expect month by month — worth reading before you pack.

Arrival

Your Wild Horizons guide meets you in the arrivals hall at Victoria Falls International Airport — name board in hand, transfer vehicle ready. The drive to The Elephant Camp takes approximately 20 minutes. Keep your eyes open on the approach through the national park; elephant are a feature of that road at most times of day, and first sightings before check-in are not unusual.

On arrival, the camp manager walks you through your itinerary and activity timings for the days ahead. The Elephant Camp has 12 luxury suites positioned along the ridge, each oriented for privacy and for the view — the gorge to the north, the sanctuary below, the spray of the Falls on the horizon. Ask to be shown around the full property before you settle in. The stargazing deck is easy to miss on the first pass and worth knowing about from night one.

Afternoon — Gorge Sundowner

Your first afternoon is built around the signature Elephant Camp experience: cocktails and canapés on the rim of the Batoka Gorge. A short game drive through the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary brings you to the gorge edge as the light begins to soften. The Zambezi surges 120 metres below; the gorge walls catch the last of the afternoon sun; and if conditions are right, the spray of the Falls glows to the east. The canapés are prepared by the lodge kitchen and rotate seasonally — the smoked game skewers have a following.

Evening — Dinner at The Elephant Camp

Dinner is served in the main lodge area, open to the bush on three sides. The kitchen team draws on Zimbabwean produce and regional flavour, and the menu shifts with the season. On still nights, dinner moves to the outdoor fire area, and the sound of the Zambezi carries up from the gorge below. Your first evening at The Elephant Camp tends to run late. That is usually a good sign.

Day 2 — Victoria Falls, The Lookout Café, Elephant Conservation Experience, Sundowner Cruise

Seasonal note: volume and visibility at the Falls varies considerably across the year. Our month-by-month guide helps you understand which viewpoints are most rewarding for your timing.

Morning — Guided Tour of Victoria Falls

The day begins with a guided walking tour of Victoria Falls on the Zimbabwe side — 16 numbered viewpoints along a 1,708-metre corridor that delivers the most complete and continuous view of the Falls available from either bank. Our guides have walked this path for years; they time the visit to avoid peak crowds and know which viewpoints reward patience in which conditions. In peak spray season, you will be soaked before Viewpoint 3. Bring your rain jacket; the views are worth it.

The Rainforest Raincoat Project — a Wild Horizons community initiative that provides ponchos to local school children visiting the Falls — was born from exactly this walk. Look for the Braille rail along the footpath, installed with Wild Horizons support to give visually impaired visitors an independent route through the viewpoints.

The Rainforest Entry Fee is US$58 per person for international visitors, payable on invoice and not included in the package rate.

Midday — Lunch at The Lookout Café

After the Falls, your guide takes you to The Lookout Café for a included lunch. The Lookout sits on the gorge rim directly above Rapid 1 — one of the most dramatically positioned restaurants in southern Africa. The grilled Zambezi bream is the dish most guests return to, though the menu shifts seasonally. Table 4, the corner table on the outer deck, gives the most unobstructed drop to the river below; it is worth requesting when you book.

The Canopy Tour departs from directly next to the café — a network of slides, rope bridges, and elevated walkways through the Batoka Gorge that gives a bird’s-eye perspective of the gorge system and the Falls spray above. It is a two-hour experience and pairs naturally with lunch. Ask the team to schedule it before or after your meal depending on your preference.

Afternoon — Helicopter Flight of Angels and Elephant Conservation Experience

The Helicopter Flight of Angels is the bonus activity included in the 4-Night Signature Special, though guests may substitute any of the four options — Chobe Day Trip, Malachite Dinner Cruise, or White Water Rafting — depending on preference. The flight is 12 to 13 minutes over the Falls and the Batoka Gorge. Our pilots fly a figure-of-eight pattern rather than a single loop, giving two approaches to the main face from different angles and a window position for everyone on board.

Park fees of US$36 per person (US$18 park fee plus US$18 fuel levy) apply to the helicopter flight and are payable on invoice, not included in the package rate. Following the flight, the afternoon centres on the Elephant Conservation Experience in the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary. The resident herd has lived within this concession for decades — the sanctuary was established in the 1980s as a refuge for orphaned and injured elephant following culling operations, and the rescue-rehabilitate-reintegrate programme has been running ever since. Guests are taken to where the herd has chosen to spend the afternoon, not the other way around. Time with the animals is unstructured; the experience is in the watching and listening, guided by the elephant care team who know each animal individually.

Close but respectful interaction with the elephant herd — sanctuary setting, natural behaviour, unposed. Avoid any imagery suggesting riding or staging.

Evening — Sunset Cruise on the Zambezi Royal

Your second evening at The Elephant Camp begins on the water. The Zambezi Royal sunset cruise departs from the Wild Horizons jetty in the late afternoon and explores the upper Zambezi close to the Falls — a section of river flanked by Zambezi and Mosi-Oa-Tunya National Parks. The 5-star boat offers hot and cold canapés, creative cocktails, and a running wildlife commentary from the captain as you move upriver. Hippo, crocodile, and elephant at the water’s edge are regular evening sightings. The Zambezi Sundowner Cruise is included in the package; river usage fees apply and are payable on invoice.

Day 3 — Transfer to Old Drift Lodge, Wildlife Trust, River Safari

Seasonal note: the Zambezi and its wildlife behave differently in each season. Our Best Time to Visit guide covers river levels, wildlife movement, and what to expect at Old Drift month by month.

Morning — Game Drive and Wildlife Trust Visit

Day 3 starts early. A morning game drive through the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary in the cool hours before the heat of the day is one of the most reliably productive wildlife experiences the Victoria Falls area offers — predators are still moving, elephant are active near water, and the birdlife in the riverine forest is at its most vocal.

Back at The Elephant Camp after the drive, a visit to the Victoria Falls Wildlife Trust follows — a non-profit conservation and rehabilitation organisation operating from within the sanctuary, effectively on your doorstep. The Trust runs a High-Care Wildlife Rescue and Rehabilitation Centre and conducts active research into the species that share this landscape. A guided visit with members of the Trust team covers current rehabilitation cases and the broader conservation picture for wildlife in the region. This activity must be scheduled with lodge management on arrival and is subject to availability.

After breakfast and checkout, your Wild Horizons guide transfers you from The Elephant Camp to Old Drift Lodge — a 20-minute drive that crosses from the sanctuary into the Zambezi National Park. The landscape shifts noticeably. The ridge gives way to the floodplain; the bush opens up along the river. Old Drift Lodge sits on the bank of the Zambezi itself, 4.5 kilometres upstream from Victoria Falls town.

Afternoon — Arrival at Old Drift and River Safari

The Old Drift Lodge manager meets you on arrival and walks you through your itinerary and activity schedule for the next two days. The lodge has 10 double suites and 4 family suites, each positioned in the trees along the riverbank with private decks facing the Zambezi, indoor and outdoor showers, a plunge pool, and an outdoor bath with uninterrupted river views. The main lodge area faces north to the Zambezi and south to a waterhole — wildlife moves through both directions throughout the day.

Your first afternoon at Old Drift is spent on the water. A river safari on one of the lodge’s luxury 10-seater pontoon boats moves you into Zambezi National Park along the river corridor — one of the best ways to experience the park’s wildlife, particularly elephant, buffalo, and the abundant birdlife that concentrates along the Zambezi in the late afternoon. River safaris run in both morning and afternoon slots; the afternoon departure gives you time to settle in before heading out. Drinks and snacks are served on board.

Final Thoughts From Those Who Call It Home

Seasonal note: wildlife activity in Zambezi National Park peaks in the dry months when animals concentrate at the river. Our seasonal guide covers what each month offers.

Morning — Game Drive in Zambezi National Park

A morning game drive in Zambezi National Park follows the river corridor in 4×4 safari vehicles. The park supports elephant, buffalo, kudu, giraffe, zebra, eland, impala, warthog, lion, and occasional wild dog and cheetah. Morning drives at Old Drift run with tea baskets and snacks — a practical detail that matters on a cold-season early start. Our guides have been working this park for years and read animal behaviour rather than following a fixed route.

Midday — At Leisure

The middle of Day 4 is intentionally unscheduled. By this point in the stay, most guests have found their rhythm — some want another activity, some want the plunge pool and a book. The lodge shuttle runs into Victoria Falls town for those who want to explore the local markets or pick up a few things before departure. The lodge spa is available for treatments; ask the team on arrival if you want to reserve time. Lunch is at the lodge, overlooking the river. It is worth eating slowly.

Afternoon — Final River Safari

Your last afternoon at Old Drift returns to the water for a final river safari. The Zambezi in the late afternoon, when the light softens and the animals come to drink, is one of those experiences that holds up however many times you repeat it. Our guides read the river the way they read the bush — following the animals rather than a timetable. Drinks and snacks are served on board.

For guests who have not yet walked in the bush, a guided walking safari in the Zambezi National Park is available as an alternative — or an addition — to the river safari on Day 4 morning or afternoon. Please note that walking safaris are not available to guests under 16 years of age.

Old Drift walking safari — guide and guests on foot in Zambezi National Park

Evening — Final Dinner at Old Drift

Dinner on your last evening at Old Drift Lodge is served overlooking the river. The lodge kitchen team will have adjusted to your preferences across the stay; a last request is always worth making. The waterhole to the south of the main area attracts elephant and buffalo after dark, and the lodge team will let you know if something interesting is drinking while you eat. It is that kind of place.

Four nights across two very different properties is enough time to understand what Wild Horizons has built here. The Elephant Camp gives you the gorge, the sanctuary, and the sky. Old Drift gives you the river, the park, and the slow passage of the Zambezi. Together they cover most of what Victoria Falls is.

Your Bonus Activity — Choosing the Right One

The 4-Night Signature Special includes one complimentary bonus activity per person. The four options are genuinely different from each other; here is how we think about the choice:

The Helicopter Flight of Angels is 12 to 13 minutes over the Falls and the Batoka Gorge. Our pilots fly a figure-of-eight pattern giving two approaches to the main curtain and a window seat for everyone. It is the fastest and most complete way to understand the geography of the Falls. Park fees of US$36 per person apply on invoice.

White Water Rafting on the Zambezi below the Falls covers Rapid 1 to Rapid 23 depending on water levels — a full day in the Batoka Gorge that is consistently rated among the best single-day rafting experiences in the world. Not available during high-water months when certain rapids close for safety; not suitable for guests with back or neck conditions. River usage fees apply.

The Chobe Day Trip crosses into Botswana for a full day of land- and river-based game viewing in Chobe National Park — one of the highest concentrations of elephant on the continent, with lion, buffalo, hippo, and exceptional birdlife. A long day, departing early and returning around 18:30, but for wildlife enthusiasts it is one of the most productive single days of game viewing in the region. Chobe National Park fees of US$25 per person apply on invoice. The Malachite Dinner Cruise is a 3-hour evening on the Zambezi with a full three-course dinner served on the water. It is the most relaxed of the four options — ideal if you want one final unhurried evening on the river before departure. River usage fees apply.

We Have Already Packaged This Trip for You

The 4-Night Signature Special (4NTECODL) is available year-round and includes all accommodation at The Elephant Camp and Old Drift Lodge, all meals and local drinks, all inter-property and airport transfers, all activities listed in this itinerary — game drives, guided Falls tour, Wildlife Trust visit, Elephant Conservation Experience, river safaris, the Zambezi Royal sunset cruise — and one complimentary bonus activity of your choice.

The Sustainability and Conservation Levy of US$50 per person per night is payable on invoice across all four nights. The Rainforest Entry Fee (US$58 per person for international visitors) is payable on invoice when the Falls tour is included. Bonus activity fees — helicopter park fees, river usage fees, Chobe park fees — are itemised separately on invoice.

If four nights is not quite enough, the 6-Night Signature Special (6NTECODL) gives you three nights at each property and two complimentary bonus activities. We will cover that itinerary in the next installment of this series — ask our team in the meantime. Browse all current packages at wildhorizons.co.za/2026-specials-and-packages/.

Final Thoughts from Our Team

The question guests ask most often after a Signature Special stay is why they did not book more nights. Four nights across two properties moves at a comfortable pace — there is enough time to settle into each lodge, enough variety to feel like you have truly seen Victoria Falls from more than one angle, and enough space between activities to actually absorb the place.

We have been planning these stays for 25 years. The Elephant Camp and Old Drift Lodge were designed to complement each other: different landscapes, different rhythms, the same standard of guiding and hospitality. Putting them together in a single itinerary is something we do confidently, because we built both of them.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the 4-Night Signature Special and what does it include?

The 4-Night Signature Special (4NTECODL) combines 2 nights at The Elephant Camp with 2 nights at Old Drift Lodge. It includes all accommodation, all meals and local drinks, all inter-property and airport transfers, game drives, a guided tour of Victoria Falls, the Elephant Conservation Experience, a Wildlife Trust visit, river safaris at Old Drift, the Zambezi Royal sunset cruise, and one complimentary bonus activity: Helicopter Flight of Angels, White Water Rafting, Chobe Day Trip, or Malachite Dinner Cruise. The Sustainability and Conservation Levy (US$50 per person per night across all 4 nights), Rainforest Entry Fee, and certain bonus activity fees are payable on invoice.

How different are The Elephant Camp and Old Drift Lodge?

Significantly different, which is why the combination works. The Elephant Camp sits on a ridge above the Wild Horizons Wildlife Sanctuary with views over the Batoka Gorge and the Victoria Falls spray — the emphasis is on the gorge, the sanctuary wildlife, and the conservation programmes on site. Old Drift Lodge sits on the banks of the Zambezi inside Zambezi National Park — the emphasis is on the river, game drives along the floodplain, and the rhythm of the water. The guiding team and hospitality standard are consistent across both; the landscape and atmosphere are distinct.

Can I change the order and stay at Old Drift Lodge first?

The standard itinerary places The Elephant Camp first and Old Drift Lodge second, which works well logistically and builds naturally from the gorge landscape to the river. Reversing the order is possible — speak to our reservations team and we will confirm availability and logistics for your travel dates.

Is a 6-Night Signature Special available?

Yes. The 6-Night Signature Special (6NTECODL) gives you 3 nights at The Elephant Camp and 3 nights at Old Drift Lodge, with two complimentary bonus activities included. It is the right choice for guests who want more time to settle into each property and a less structured pace. We will be covering the 6-night itinerary in the next installment of this series — contact our reservations team for details in the meantime.

Do I need a visa to visit Zimbabwe?

Most nationalities can purchase a visa on arrival at Victoria Falls International Airport. If you plan to take the Chobe Day Trip into Botswana, the KAZA Univisa (available at the border) covers Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana and is worth considering. Visa fees are not included in any Wild Horizons package rate. We recommend completing the Zimbabwe online immigration form before travel to save time at the airport.
