Where the “Flight of Angels” name comes from
The name is not marketing. When David Livingstone first saw the Victoria Falls in 1855, he wrote that the scenes were so lovely they must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight. More than a century and a half later, the helicopter flight that traces the same view took the phrase as its own. It is a small piece of history, and worth knowing before you lift off.
The 12 to 13 minute Flight of Angels
This is the classic, and for good reason. After take-off the helicopter turns straight out towards the Falls and flies’ circuits over them in both directions, so whichever side of the aircraft you are sitting, you get the view and the photograph. In twelve or thirteen minutes you take in the full 1.7-kilometre width of the Falls, the spray rising hundreds of meters, the Victoria Falls Bridge and the first of the zig-zag gorges downstream. For most first-time visitors, this is all you need to understand the scale of the place, and it is the flight many of our guests choose.
The 25-minute Zambezi Spectacular
Double the time, and a good deal more to see. The Zambezi Spectacular gives you the same circuits over the Falls, then carries on up the Zambezi and out over the Zambezi National Park before turning back. This is where the flight becomes a wildlife experience as well as a Falls one, with a real chance of spotting elephant, hippo and other game along the river and on the floodplains below. The extra minutes also matter for photography: more passes, more light to work with, and time to settle once the first rush of the Falls has passed. If you have come a long way and want the fuller picture, or if a camera rarely leaves your hands, this is the one.

What the flight is like, and what to know
The flights are flown in a fleet of seven Bell helicopters: three Bell 206 B3 Jet Rangers, which seat four with three window seats, and four larger Bell 206 L3 Long Rangers, which seat six with five window seats. In practice, almost every seat is a window seat, and all of them have the large bubble windows that make the view, and the photographs, so good. A few practical notes before you fly: there is a weight limit, so travel light and leave valuables at your hotel; a professionally filmed video and photographs of your flight are available to buy afterwards; and courtesy pick-up and drop-off from Victoria Falls town and the main hotels and lodges, along with national park fees and the fuel levy, are included in the flight.

From about June onwards the spray settles and the full curtain becomes clearer, and by the low-water months the geology of the gorge is laid bare.
