Lunar Rainbow at Victoria Falls – One of the Rarest Natural Phenomena on Earth
Victoria Falls is one of only a handful of places on Earth where you can see a lunar rainbow – also called a moonbow – a rainbow formed by moonlight instead of sunlight. Wild Horizons’ Lunar Rainbow Tour takes you into Victoria Falls Rainforest on full-moon nights to witness this extraordinary phenomenon in person.
What Is a Lunar Rainbow (Moonbow)?
A moonbow is a rainbow that appears at night when light from a bright full moon refracts through water droplets suspended in the air. At Victoria Falls, the enormous volume of spray rising from the 108-metre drop creates perfect conditions for this phenomenon year-round.
The effect is softer and more ethereal than a daytime rainbow – a glowing arc of colour set against the darkness of the African sky, with the roar of the Zambezi River as your soundtrack. Victoria Falls (known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya, “The Smoke That Thunders”) is widely regarded as the best place in the world to see a moonbow, thanks to the sheer scale of its spray column.
What to Expect on the Lunar Rainbow Tour
Guided by experienced Wild Horizons rangers, you walk through Victoria Falls Rainforest after dark as the full moon rises and illuminates the mist. Here is what the evening involves:
- Arrive at the park gate shortly before sunset for a safety briefing.
- Walk the rainforest trail as darkness falls and the full moon lights up the spray.
- Pause at prime viewpoints chosen by your guide for the best moonbow visibility.
- Spend approximately 1.5–2 hours in the rainforest.
- Return to the gate with an optional transfer back to your hotel.
The combination of moonlight, cascading water, and the sounds of the African bush makes this one of the most atmospheric and memorable things to do in Victoria Falls – for couples, solo travellers, and families alike.

When Is the Best Time to See a Moonbow at Victoria Falls?
Moonbows are visible during the three nights around each full moon (the night before, the night of, and the night after). The strongest moonbows occur during the high-water season from February to August, when the Zambezi is in flood and spray volumes are at their peak. April and May typically produce the most spectacular displays.
During the dry season (September to December), moonbows are still visible from the Zimbabwe side but are smaller and less intense. They are not visible from the Zambia side in these months as the eastern cataract dries up.

Moonbow Photography Tips for Victoria Falls
The Lunar Rainbow Tour is a favourite for photographers visiting Victoria Falls. To capture the moonbow:
- Bring a tripod and a camera capable of long exposures (10 to 30 seconds).
- Use a wide-angle lens (14 to 24mm) to capture the full arc against the falls.
- Set ISO between 800 and 3200 depending on moonlight intensity.
- A waterproof bag or cover is essential – the spray is heavy, especially in high-water months.
Smartphone cameras with night modes can also capture a faint moonbow, though results vary.

Frequently Asked Questions – Lunar Rainbow Victoria Falls
A lunar rainbow (also called a moonbow) is a rainbow produced by moonlight rather than sunlight. It occurs when light from a full moon refracts through water droplets in the air. Moonbows are much rarer than daytime rainbows because they require a bright full moon, clear skies, and a large source of water spray.
Victoria Falls in southern Africa is one of the best places in the world to see a moonbow, thanks to the massive volume of spray produced by the falls. Other locations include Yosemite Falls in California and Cumberland Falls in Kentucky, though sightings there are less reliable.
Yes. A tripod and a camera with manual long-exposure settings (10 to 30 seconds) are recommended. Wide-angle lenses work best. The spray is heavy, so bring waterproof protection for your equipment.
Yes. The tour is a guided walk through the rainforest and is suitable for families, including children of walking age. The path is well-maintained but can be slippery, so sturdy shoes are recommended.
The tour lasts approximately 1.5 to 2 hours, including the walk through the rainforest and time at the viewpoints.
Wear dark clothing (to minimise light reflection), sturdy non-slip shoes, and bring a waterproof jacket. You will get wet from the spray. A small torch or head lamp with a red-light mode is helpful.
Overcast skies can prevent the moonbow from forming. If the tour is cancelled due to weather, alternatives or rescheduling options are provided, where possible.
