The Problem
In many Victoria Falls communities, households rely heavily on firewood and fossil fuels for cooking and energy. This dependence contributes to deforestation, greenhouse gas emissions, indoor air pollution and significant health challenges. Women and young girls often spend hours collecting firewood, limiting time for school, work and other opportunities. The environmental and social costs of traditional energy sources have long-lasting impacts on both communities and the region’s fragile ecosystems.
The Solution
Since 2021, Wild Horizons has piloted the installation of 62 biogas digesters in Victoria Falls. These innovative systems convert organic waste into clean, renewable energy, reducing reliance on firewood while improving air quality and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Beyond environmental benefits, biogas digesters free women and girls from firewood collection, improve health and create opportunities for education and income generation.
